Houston Community College Board of Trustees elects new member, chairman

The Houston Community College Board of Trustees recently elected officers for the new year.

According to a board press release, "The Houston Community College Board of Trustees elected Bruce A. Austin, trustee for District II, as HCC Board Chairman for 2013. The HCC Board unanimously voted to install Herlinda Garcia, a former HCC trustee (1989-2003) and principal of Houston Independent School District's J.P. Henderson Elementary School, as the trustee for HCC District III."

The Houston Community College system operates colleges in Houston, Missouri City and Stafford, serving more than 70,000 students each semester. It is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the county and has more international students than any community college in the country. Houston Community College was created in 1971 under the governance of Houston Independent School District as a result of a public referendum, and it was separated from HISD in 1989 when it established its own board of trustees. Houston Community College awards associate degrees in arts, arts in teaching, science and applied science as well as certificates.

Houston Community College is at 3100 Main St., Houston.
