High School for Fine and Performing Arts to hold art show
Local ninth-graders will display their work Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Houston-area High School for Performing and Visual Arts Gallery.
The exhibit will take place from 3:45-5 p.m. at 4119 Montrose Blvd., in Houston.
Admission is free and open to the public.
According to a school release, High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a member of the Houston Independent School District, evolved in 1971 from a realization that gifted young artists need highly specialized and rigorous training in the arts to be prepared for the intense competition they will meet in colleges, conservatories, and the professional arts world. The creation of HSPVA represented the first attempt by any public high school in the nation to correlate an academic program with concentrated training in the arts. The major difference from other schools in the district is HSPVA offers the added ingredient of correlating the arts with academics, rather than treating either as isolated disciplines. Students spend three hours every day in rigorous focused study in one art discipline with the balance of the days study in academics. All students must audition for placement at HSPVA.
