Harris County detention officers blamed for deadly beating
Harris County and its deputies are being sued in connection with a deadly attack against a handcuffed inmate. Marie A. Hicks-Fields, Evangeline E. Campbell and others, on behalf of the deceased Norman F. Hicks Sr., filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Aug. 22 in the Harris County District Court against Christopher Pool, other unnamed sheriff's deputies and Harris County. The plaintiffs say on Jan. 22, 2011, Hicks died in a Houston hospital after Pool and other deputies assaulted him while he was incarcerated in the Harris County Jail. The suit alleges a handcuffed Hicks suffered severe brain trauma, broken facial bones and fractured ribs. He arrived at the Harris County Jail on Jan. 7, 2011 in good physical health, according to the brief. Hicks-Fields and the other plaintiffs are seeking damages and court costs. They are being represented in the case by Houston attorney Harold Dutton Jr. Harris County District Court Case No. 2012-48389. This is a report on a civil lawsuit filed at the Harris County Courthouse. The details in this report come from an original complaint filed by a plaintiff. Please note, a complaint represents an accusation by a private individual, not the government. It is not an indication of guilt, and it only represents one side of the story.
