Houston Police Department initiates CSSI program
The Houston Police Department is initiating a Chronic Consumer Stabilization Initiative program.
The CSSI program will employ officers and caseworkers to address the individuals who most frequently use Houston Police and Fire services, according to a press release.
Instead of responding to calls that come in by these frequent users, the Houston Police Department will reach out to these individuals.
According to the press release, this unique approach has won multiple awards and recognition from law enforcement groups around the world, and the city of Houston will also save money typically spent in response to these cases.
Many of the people who would be reached by the CSSI service have mental health issues, and two additional CSSI caseworkers will be assigned to help keep these individuals safe.
