Contemporary Arts Museum to show photography of Alvin Baltrop
Alvin Baltrop, ‘Three Navy Sailors,’ 1969-1972. Gelatin silver print. 8 1/2 × 12 3/4 inches. Collection Morteza Barharloo, Houston.
"Perspectives 179 - Alvin Baltrop: Dreams into Glass," the first major solo museum survey of work by the late Baltrop, opens Friday, July 20 and will be on display through Sunday, Oct. 21 at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
Baltrop died in 2004 at age 55 after a battle with cancer. While his work was rarely seen in public during his lifetime, it has gained national attention within the last five years.
The exhibit features both vintage photographs and recent prints taken by Baltrop over a 35-year period, from the mid-1960s to the early 2000s.
There is also a slide presentation of images shot by Baltrop that were never printed, a sound collage taken from phone conversations and interviews and archival and ephemeral material lent by the artist's trust.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Admission is free.
