Nemeroff Law Firm wins verdict for mesothelioma victim
A Louisiana jury awarded one of the largest verdicts for a mesothelioma victim in recent history.
Frederick Schulte was awarded a $12 million verdict in his case filed in Orleans Parish. Schulte, repeatedly exposed to asbestos while working as a shipbuilder, was diagnosed with epithelioid mesothelioma in October 2011.
Mesothelioma is a common form of cancer that attacks the lining of internal organs, such as the lungs. Treatment can be costly and time consuming, often requiring surgery, chemotherapy or radiation. Only 40 percent of mesothelioma patients survive longer than one year after being diagnosed.
“Time is crucial for mesothelioma patients and the legal system can sometimes be difficult and slow,” attorney Rick Nemeroff said in a press release. “But in this case, we were able to go from diagnosis to verdict in less than 10 months.”
Schulte spent time as a shipfitter and ironfitter for McDermott Shipyard Inc., working with asbestos pipe insulation manufactured by the defendant, Mundet Cork Company.
He was later exposed to asbestos yet again as a radar technician at Avondale Shipyards.
“It’s a real tragedy that, through no fault or negligence of his own, Schulte and his family must suffer,” Nemeroff said.
