Nicole Shanahan has been elected vice president of the Texas Association of Supervisors of Mathematics for the 2012-13 school year. In her leadership role at TASM, Shanahan will assist with the organization's initiatives to promote effectiveness in supervision, coordination and teaching of mathematics.

"I look forward to collaborating with my mathematics colleagues as an officer within TASM and providing the best professional development to educators to prepare students for the new state math standards," Shanahan said in a press release.

The statewide organization hosts leaders from the Texas Education Agency's math and testing departments for information sessions on curriculum and updates for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness.

At HCDE, Shanahan works to provide leadership groups and professional development workshops for mathematics educators throughout Harris County. Her duties in her new position will be similar, as she will work to select tools for professional development for TASM members.

As a longtime math educator, Shanahan has taught at Houston, Spring Branch and Spring school districts. She is a former curriculum specialist and math coach. Her accomplishments include HISD District Teacher of the Year and writer of curriculum for the Texas Virtual School Network.
