Urban League Young Professionals to host workshop for teens

A young teen entrepreneurship workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23 at the Houston Area Urban League building, located at 1301 Texas Ave. in Houston.

Presented by the Houston Area Urban League Young Professionals, the Youth Entrepreneurship Institute seeks to empower young people economically by helping them develop and pursue business ideas, according to a press release. Individual sessions at the one-day workshop will include topics such as product development, finance, marketing and sales. Area business owners will also take part in the workshop, the release noted.

"We are excited to host our very first Youth Entrepreneurship Institute: Class of 2012," said Vinnika Johnson and April Todd, HAULYP Community Outreach Committee co-chairs, in the release. "We want to ensure that our youth are adequately equipped with the fundamentals of starting their own business so we can increase the success rate of small-business ownership in the African-American community.  We have partnered up with several local businesses to help contribute to the overall success of this event."

As part of the workshop, teens will get a chance to apply what they learn from the workshop in a "real-life business challenge," according to the release.
