Swimming lessons for all ages are offered at Tellepsen Family YMCA.

Parent-child classes, for ages 6-36 months, introduce skills at the child’s development level. A parent must accompany the child in the water.

Pike is a beginning level class for children to adjust to the water and develop independent movement. Basic stroke and kicking skills, floating and pool safety are taught.

Eel class, for intermediate beginners, is for children comfortable in the water. A participant must be able to swim at least five feet with face in the water without the aid of a flotation device. Children learn to float, kick and perform progressive arm movement across the pool.

Ray/Starfish class is for advanced beginners. Children must be able to swim 15 feet, face in the water, without the aid of a flotation device. Participants will review and improve strokes, build endurance and tread water.

Polliwog class, open to beginners who have not taken any YMCA swim lessons in the last year, is for children who are uncomfortable or inexperienced in the water. Basic skills are covered, including gliding with face in water, floating and kicking.

Guppy, a class for advanced beginners, is for children who have not taken a YMCA swim lesson in the last year and have the ability to swim 20 feet without a flotation device. Participants learn to swim while taking breaths.

Minnow class is for intermediate swimmers who have not taken a YMCA swim lesson in the last year. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards on fronts and backs with or without a flotation device. Children will learn the front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke, sidestroke and beginner breaststroke.

Fish/Flying Fish is an advanced class for swimmers who have not taken a class at the YMCA in the past year. Children learn the front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, sidestroke and rudimentary breaststroke in addition to refining the breast stroke, learning the butterfly, making open turns and improving other strokes.
