Sheriff's Office provides online option for depositing money

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is now providing relatives and friends of Harris County Jail inmates with an online option for depositing money into the inmates' jail bank accounts.

Inmates use their jail bank accounts to purchase snacks and additional toiletries from the jail commissary. Their relatives and friends can use a credit card to make an online deposit at mycarepack.com. They will be charged a service fee ranging from $2.75 to $6.75, no more than the fee for making a deposit in person.

Other deposit options are still viable. People can use kiosks in the lobbies of Harris County Jail buildings in downtown Houston; by calling 866-394-0490; by mailing a money order or cashier's check to Inmate Trust Fund, 1200 Baker St., Houston, TX 77002; or via Western Union Quick Collects at 800-225-5227.

For information on inmate bank accounts, go to hcso.hctx.net/inmateinfo.aspx. The Harris County Jail system holds about 9,000 inmates. It is the third largest in the nation.
