Rothko Chapel to hold summer solstice celebration
The Rothko Chapel will celebrate the summer solstice on June 20.
The chapel will be open from sunrise to sunset, approximately 6:20 a.m. to 10:25 p.m. The chapel will also offer 108 Sun Salutations at sunrise at 6:21 a.m., on the plaza. Sun salutations are a series of yoga poses. They are designed to warm up the body. The number 108 is considered an auspicious one in yoga philosophy. Participants are invited to complete all, as many or as few of the 108 sun salutations as they desire.
The chapel will then offer Crystal Bowl Meditation at noon with yoga instructor, breath facilitator and owner of Bayou Bliss Yoga Dana Shamas. Shamas will play crystal bowls inside the chapel while participants meditate.
Kaminari Taiko of Houston, a Japanese drumming ensemble, will perform on the plaza to mark the end of the summer solstice at 8 p.m. "Taiko" is Japanese for drum. Kaminari Taiko was founded in 1996 by Jay Mochizuki. He is joined by a number of musicians from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.
The drumming will be followed by a public reception.
The chapel is located at 1409 Sul Ross, Houston.
