High-tech no-kill animal shelter opens
Friends For Life, Houston's fastest-growing no-kill animal shelter, opened an adoption center Saturday, June 2.
The Don Sanders Adoption Center at 107 E. 22nd St. in the Heights (near Yale and East 22nd) boasts modern features and comforts not seen in traditional pounds.
The center becomes the city's only Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified shelter. It also houses a real-life dog living room, a sophisticated air recirculation system, communal catteries, windows, skylights and open design to maximize sunlight.
A no-kill shelter promotes adoption for dogs and cats that are not terminally ill or dangerous, regardless of their age or breed popularity.
Mayor Annise Parker, State Sen. John Whitmire and members of the Houston City Council attended the 1 p.m. dedication.
