Emerald Circle awards scholarships to Houston-area teens
Twenty-four Houston-area high school students were awarded scholarships by the Emerald Circle of the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council on April 15.
More than $29,000 was given at the Gold Award Merit Scholarship event, which awards scholarships only to Girl Scouts who have received a Gold Award.
Sugar Land resident and Clements High School senior Jillian Ross received the $3,000 Judy Kunkel Memorial Scholarship, the highest-paying scholarship of the event; St. Agnes Academy's Sarah Rohrman received $2,500 from the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation; Maureen Fenninger, of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, was given a $2,000 scholarship by the Robert H. and Joanne M. Williams Foundation; and Stafford High School's Alexa Pete also received $2,000 from an Emerald Circle scholarship.
Several $1,000 Emerald Circle scholarships were given out. Among the recipients were Caroline Batten, Sharmistha Maity and Diana Yang of Bellaire High School; Ashley Cubley and Kira Kurtzman of Clear Lake High School; and Kathleen Smith of Challenge Early High School.
Joanne Williams, Emerald Circle president, presented the awards.
