Eight student-athletes from St. Thomas High School honored at signing ceremony

St. Thomas High School inducted eight Class of 2012 student-athletes into the school's Hall of Honor on Wednesday, May 2.

The inductees include Peter Foreman, Derek Martin, Jonathan Cohen, Eric Martin, Trevor Lewis, Jeremy King, Juan Gutierrez and Richard Le. Each of the honorees will move on to compete at collegiate level. These athletes join classmates Hunter Kopycinski, Austin Fairchild, Brian Schwarzbach and Christian Sanders, who signed in November.

The St. Thomas Eagles football team produced five of the day's inductees. A four-year football letterman and TAPPS First Team All-State athlete, Foreman will play for New Mexico State University. Derek Martin, who led the team in rushing and overall yardage in 2011, has signed to play football with the University of Mount Union in Ohio. Eric Martin, TAPPS First Team All-State athlete and recipient of the 2011 Christopher Hartnett Award, will play football for Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. Cohen, a TAPPS Second Team All-State football player, will attend Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Two-year letterman Trevor Lewis will attend Trinity University.

St. Thomas' lone basketball signee, King, a TAPPS First Team All-State athlete, will play for Loyola University-Chicago.

In golf, St. Thomas' TAPPS State Championship teammates Richard Le and Juan Gutierrez will play for the University of St. Thomas.

"These signings, in addition to those we had in the fall, show that our athletic department is gaining the notoriety and attention of major collegiate programs throughout the country," Athletic Director Mike Netzel said in a press release announcing the inductions. "I am extremely proud of the athletes in the Class of 2012, who have done tremendous work on and off the field."
