HISD students named National Merit Scholars
Seven students from HISD schools received National Merit Scholarships this year.
The students were Meghana Golla, Denes Marton, John Williams, Dana Felberg, Joseph Lewis and Natalia Majewska, all from Bellaire High School, and Spencer Shen from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
These students will receive a scholarship package funded by corporations, company foundations and business organizations.
The corporate sponsors only provided scholarships for students who reached the finalist level of the competition and were children of its employees, residents of the community it serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers that the company wants to encourage.
Meghana Golla was sponsored by Waste Management and will study biomedical engineering. Dana Felberg will study engineering and was financed by BP. Joseph Lewis plans to study business and was sponsored by the Chevron Corporation. Natalie Majewska's scholarship was funded by Balfour Publishing, and she plans to study engineering. Denes Marton will study economics and was also sponsored by the Chevron Corporation. Spencer Shen is undecided on his area of study but was sponsored by the National Distillers Distributors Foundation. John Williams' scholarship was financed by the Apache Corporation and he will study engineering.
Additional National Merit Scholarship recipients will be announced on May 2, May 23 and July 9.
