Special holiday for preservationists
For over a decade, the nonprofit organization Historic Houston has run a salvage warehouse at 1307 Clay in the Montrose area selling items saved from torn down historic buildings and homes. This has been a real win-win for historic preservation in Houston, as those who would like to restore historic buildings get cut rates on period materials while Historic Houston gets a fundraising stream to further their efforts to preserve the city's vanishing past.
But starting Wednesday, this deal gets even sweeter, as Historic Houston will discount everything in the warehouse through Saturday. HH members, will get 25 percent off.
The website at www.historichouston.org has a full list of items, which changes continually. As someone who has frequently used this warehouse in the ongoing restoration (Is there any other kind?) of my own 1910 Heights bungalow, I can say that I plan to be over there. You never, ever know what you're going to find in that warehouse, but you can always guarantee it'll get your mind working trying to figure out ways to integrate what's there into your own house. It's enormous fun and you might just contribute to the greater historic preservation good at the same time.
